Behind Vanishing Bangkok

Introduction

27 June 2026

Saturday, 27 June 2026

Inspired by Surat Osathanugrah’s Vanishing Bangkok photography series, Behind Vanishing Bangkok explores how nostalgia in street photography can open conversations about the past, returning to a time when film photography and darkroom printing were widely practiced in Thailand.

The program brings together Ariana Chaivaranon, Curator at Dib Bangkok, who recontextualizes these photographs within the museum’s inaugural exhibition (In)visible Presence; Ariya Bunyapamai from Bangkok Darkroom, one of the few darkroom studios in Bangkok continuing to preserve and expand analogue photography practices; and Manit Sriwanichpoom, artist, longtime contemporary, and collaborator of Surat Osathanugrah, who will share perspectives on the history of photography in Thailand during the 2000s, alongside Surat’s artistic interests and contributions to the field.

The program includes an in-depth analysis of selected photographs from the Vanishing Bangkok series, followed by a demonstration and conversation on film developing, darkroom processes, and the history of street photography in Thailand.
